DiskTune 1.1.27 available for download

DiskTune is an easy to use, on-demand, no frills disk optimizer and defragmentation utility for FAT, FAT32 and NTFS formatted drives. Through a simple to use mechanism to create 'jobs' it enables you to launch one-click jobs and schedule jobs. DiskTune is freeware. DiskTune will reorganize your disk and will make it faster and more responsive.

DiskTune is safe: It relies on the proven and reliable Windows defrag API to move files. It checks the volume state prior to defragmentation. DiskTune features a VSS safe-mode and a thermal monitor.

Version 1.1.27 adds MFT defragmentation and support for NTFS alternate data streams.

Took nearly 8 hours to optimise a 60gb windows vista partition about 25gb used on Toshiba dual core laptop with 3gb mem. Then I clicked Compact,, looks about 75% complete and its now 25 hours since it started. With no other things running. OEM windows defrag c: -w has never been more than 40 minutes here.

Hello,

No idea basically if you say 'no other things running' ... However, no other thing running is of course virtually impossible.

A full optimize here on a 200 Gb disk containing several 100.000's of files never takes more than a few hours.

BTW, Optimize already includes compact, so no need to run that again.

DiskTune does a lot more than the Windows built-in defragger so it is normal for it to take more time.

One question: Vista 32 or 64?

I like the philosophy behind DiskTune - run it when you need it, not have something running in the background. I particularly like the separate link to set the context menu items - all software should have this flexibility.

I know the documentation is still to come, but can you clarify whether I need to check the "Boot Optimisation" option when I install for it to do this? I wasn't sure what the program was going to do so I left it unchecked to start with. Is there anyway to change this afterwards or do I have to run the installation again?

Found the help file and got the answer to the question! Don't know why I got the impression that the documentation hadn't been done yet:-?

It is a very good idea to monitor the temperature and stopping if the disk gets too hot. BUT....how hot is too hot? where can i configure it? i'm running it now at 50 celsius....and wishing it stopped right now!

Hello,

The value is hardcoded currently at 55 degrees celsius, this value is however not randomly picked, that is on avarage really too hot. 50 degrees is hot but not too hot, especially since it typically peaks for short moments: either a large file is moved, or because there's increased disk activity during analysis.

I can consider picking a lower value, or I can do a default value that can however be changed by the user.
